Acquiring film posters has been a passed time of a lot of collectors over the years. From high school students who need to put something on their walls to serious collectors who spend thousands of dollars collecting, archiving and preserving motion picture memorabilia, each collector has their own special impulse for choosing the posters and promotional show art that moves them.
For many collectors, their fervor began early. In fact, for most collectors of motion picture art, the collection started as an innocent addition to decorate the walls of their room, home, club or dorm. For most people, this is where their zeal for collecting motion picture posters stopped. Though, for a select few, their excitement led them to learn more about the different types of posters, where they were made, and how to save them from the deterioration of age.
These collectors may have diversified their passion into specific areas such as French movie posters, classics, horror, comedy, or the ever popular romantic comedy. Others may have chosen to remain broad in their selection and acquisition of various posters. Because of the nature of this medium, the breadth and diversity of an individual collection can be limitless.
Most collectors are eventually bound by the amount of time they have available to devote to their practice, as well as financially constrained. Indeed, finances may be the biggest limiting factor when choosing to pursue collecting show posters and memorabilia. A small collection can run hundreds of dollars and an extensive and rare collection may run well into the millions.
Obviously, collecting posters from special movies can easily become a zeal for a variety of individuals. For those who have the appreciation for the art beyond its marketing appeal, this hobby can be truly fulfilling.
