Due to another news reports they always seems to be awful news as it always sells! it got me curious about my 4 young girls and what problems they meet in life, Challenges that were not around when we were boys and girls.
When I was a early girl nothing was more demanded than the safety and well being of our family. We were directed not leave the door unbolted so we were safe from people coming into our home, and we were not permited to chat to unfamiliar persons.
Apparently things were a lot different back then and I am not sure they are even better or worse at the moment?
I remember playing outside with mates for ages at a time but l always had to be home for a meal and at defined pre determined time so our father could ascertain we were all right. No mobile devices in those instances, your father and mother did not start to panic until you didn’t turn up on time and boy were you in trouble if you were late. I guess the reason we were in so much trouble for being home too late was the reason that there was zero chance to check if we were Just fine and no way to locate us.
So you comeback at home over an hour or so late and your mum or dad has had a long time of worry and now they see your just fine, the mixed emotions of relief and anger kick in leaving you with the lecture of a life time and grounded for a a few days or so until they cool down, education learned.
So what about today’s by laws?
Be certain the door is locked? Yes. Look both ways before you cross the hi-way? Yes. Be home for a meal 12.00 noon? Ah well not as a matter of course as I’m almost sure most families have issued their children with cell phones and can keep in contact to find where they are.
Don’t communicate to strangers? Not a problem I definitley won’t talk to unfamiliar persons! But hold it, what about strangers online and on facebook style networking sites? internet safety software. Oh and how do we be sure if the unfamiliar persons are not acting to be a friend, I mean if a person saw a unfamiliar person clothed up as any of your best friends in the Main Street I beleive you would notice but not on a website? Ah major problem!! If you reflect about it this again defeats locking your door locked, Why? Because you are still letting visitors into your house who may be talking to your children through the Internet.
OK the change of communication age has brought about a amount of pros and cons. So unless and until you have a chat with your children and teenagers about the risks that lurk all around the web connection the best other plan is to get hold of some internet safety software.
