One thing that I love to do and which I could do more often is long-distance travel astride a Harley Davidson. By now many of my readers konw I’m from the State of Virginia. While the idea of riding abroad has come up now and then, my trips out west on the back of my Harley Davidson Road King have taught me that there is plenty to see in my own “back yard” and I’ll probably not live long enough to want to ride anywhere else.

I think that a 2-week trip is ideal unless you can travel with an empty sidecar or a mini-trailer to store a lot of gear in. I’ve discovered that after a while, you start looking for better quarters as constant riding is enriching, but can be draining both physically and mentally over time. Of course, if you love to ride you might only take a week off and if you have quite a bit of monetary resources, then you can even hop from resort to resort for months on end.

Family is a large consideration of course. My kids are all grown and live rather busy lifestyles. I like to pop in now and then, but not for much longer than 5 days at a time. I almost always try to drop in on Thursday and leave by Tuesday. I love the grandkids, but they can get to you after a while.

What to bring on your trip is a matter of prefference and storage capacity. I’m not going to give you advice on what you should pack out your Harley Davidson motorcycle with, because I don’t know what your travel style is.. I sometimes feel like I leave half-prepared and end up coming back with a lot more stuff than when I left.

I’ll publish more next time about being safe when you are traveling long distances.
